Health and Safety in the Workplace Is Often Over Looked and Can Be a Fatal Business Mistake.

Office Health and safety hazards cartoon. Hazards in a office environment. Spot the health and safety hazards cartoon. Numerous health and safety hazards illustrated in this office hazards cartoon. Health and safety cartoon for training purposes - ask your staff how many hazards they can spot? Some of the health and safety hazards include: Hanging Health and Safety Law poster upsidedown, fire alarm bell has cloth to stop bell ringing, fire extinguisher missing, leaking chemicals stacked upsidedown, guy climbing racking dangerously,

This is the biggest safety cartoon I’ve ever drawn with over 50 safety hazards highlighted.(A2 in size!)

Workplace related injuries are all too common as this safety cartoon illustrates. Most people aren’t given the proper instruction or even shown the right way of doing things so they often make simple careless mistakes. Depending on what they are doing however someone trying to change a light bulb or fix a printer can end up seriously injured, maybe even dead. The first and most important thing to do to a workplace that this office staff has completely ignored is keeping the area neat and tidy. Someone tripping over a bag like Larry is about to because Janice left it lying beside her desk on the right side of the office is all too common place an accident and with Mary trying to climb around behind her desk at the same time they could really hurt each other if they fell into one another. Even worse Gary at the bottom right has boxes scattered everywhere and poor Philip who really needs a clear pathway to get through with his wheelchair has to wait for him to clean up his mess. This cripples work productivity and depending on what kind of work is being done in the office can be extremely dangerous.

It’s scary to see at the top of the picture that Charles thinks he can vicariously stack boxes on top of a bookshelf as he is. The way those items are organized makes the shelf very top heavy making it want to fall forward. Climbing up it as he is practically asking for it to fall forward and seriously hurt him. What makes it even more terrifying is the door next to him that is propped open with a fire extinguisher! This is a recipe for disaster and highlights the importance of keeping a clean and organized work area. It is shocking to see that this office crew has to door on the top right of the office completely blocked off with boxes and a broken step ladder. There are all kinds of things wrong with this! Perhaps this would be acceptable if that part of the building was shut off and not safe for people to enter. But it is labeled at a fire exit! It should be completely clear and the sign should be repaired straight away.

Proper employee training is the only way to avoid these sorts of problems from occurring and making sure that everyone knows it is dangerous to keep around broken equipment, leave their things lying around, or using ladders that aren’t setup properly. Each and every office should include a workplace safety training course to avoid any sort of mishaps that could lead to serious business losses and even worse a potential death in the workforce.

Health and Safety Cartoons – they could save your life.

Health and Safety is something that is almost seen as a negative thing in today’s society. Whether it is preventing us from carrying out our jobs in a more obvious manner or the endless amounts of paperwork that come with some risk assessments, it’s not that hard to see why.

Cartoons are a visually engaging way of delivering these health and safety notices in a less formal manner. They represent a more lighthearted approach than the bold warning notices that are less likely to be looked at as your employees flick through their handbook when starting. They also form a more welcoming and inviting environment than the standard warning signs that can seem almost aggressive in comparison. It’s a good way to try and make the red tape that little less annoying.

If you are a company that regularly receives visitors that need to be aware of the in-house health and safety regulations, cartoons can be an engaging way of indicating them. Whether in printed leaflet format, or on the walls, they are a lot more likely to be noticed by visitors and are a great way of promoting a safe and welcoming atmosphere to somewhere that could be considered to be a dangerous environment.

Another advantage to having cartoons as health and safety notices is the fact that they are easier for children to understand and engage with. Health and safety warnings are even more important to communicate to children as they may not understand why a situation can be dangerous or even deadly whereas an adult might be able to identify a dangerous environment. This is why it is so important to be able to communicate the dangers of certain activities to children as they are more at risk.

In some cases, health and safety cartoons can be more effective communicators than text. This is because they are a more visual representation that allows their audience to take in more information at once. Including humour into the message means that those reading it will be more likely to connect with it as audiences are much more likely to engage with something positive than something negative.

Overall, health and safety cartoons can be a great way of engaging your workforce, visitors and even young children to make sure that they are paying attention to the critical information that can save lives. Can you afford to not have them around?

Jay Steinfeld COE of Blinds.com standing next to two cartoon maps that were drawn by Richard Duszczak of CartoonStudio.co.uk

Richard drew our employees bending over backwards and jumping through hoops for our customers, and that’s exactly what he did for us. Richard ensured that we received precisely what we had imagined with laughter and skill. Richard’s dedication to detail, whimsical and sometimes irreverent perspective was exactly what we wanted to depict our unique culture. The artwork is a landmark feature of our office, causing both our employees and visitors alike to smile when they walk by. I highly recommend Richard and hope we’ll find another occasion to use him.
